HtmlPedigree: Search facility: 1

Index | Logs | Style | Chart | Tags | Links | Images | Dates | Pages | Home | Search | Miscellaneous

The search facility allows your visitors to find individuals in a website produced by HtmlPedigree. They do this by filling in a form on the search page, which has spaces for the surname, given name, place and/or dates associated with the individual. The visitor has the option of using wildcards to allow for uncertainty about spelling (for the surname, the soundex matching system can be used instead). An example search page is available, together with some Tips on how to use it.

The index database, the search page and the lists of results are all hosted on www.htmlpedigree.com, so that no special processing by your web servers is necessary, but the links in the lists of results lead back to your website. When you have enabled the search facility for your pages, the visitor can access the search page by using either the "Search" button that appears on the webpages or the links that appear on your home page.

Note that the search facility can be used only if your pages are on the Internet, not when they are on your hard disc or a CD.

Including the search facility in a new website

When creating your first website using HtmlPedigree, follow these steps:

  1. You should have been sent a user id number and password for the search facility.
(If you have not yet received these, or if you have lost or forgotten them, you can request them using the Send password by email form.)
  2. Follow the normal procedure to Create web pages. Before saving the web pages, click on the "Edit site and home page details" on the "Tools" menu. Then tick "Enable search facility" and enter your user id. (If this is your first website, leave the group number equal to 1.) Then click "OK" and finish by saving the web pages.
  3. Upload the pages to your web space.
  4. Finally, to create the index, go to the Login page and enter your email address and password. On the "Index management" page, under "Add new site", enter the web address of your HtmlPedigree web pages, a name for the index, and the group number 1. Then click "Submit" to create the index.
(The address should be the name of the directory containing the HtmlPedigree web pages, not including the initial "http://" - for example, "www.htmlpedigree.com/tudors/". If you wish, you can also enter a caption, which will be displayed on the search page, and a web address for a link labelled "Home". By default, this link will point to the home page produced by HtmlPedigree if you leave this blank.)

(For details of how to index more than one website, see the next page.)

Adding the search facility to an existing website

If you already have a set of HtmlPedigree web pages online, and you want to add the search facility to them, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Login page and enter your email address and indexing password.
(If you don't yet have an indexing password, or if you have lost or forgotten it, you can request one using the Send password by email form.)
  2. On the "Index management" page, under "Add new site", enter the web address of your HtmlPedigree web pages, a name for the index, and the group number (1 if you have only one site).
  3. When you click "Submit", you should see a statement of the number of pages on the site and an estimate of the time that will be required for indexing. When indexing is complete, you will see a report, including your user id and the group number. A copy of the report will also be emailed to you.
  4. To add search links to your web pages, you'll need to follow the normal Update procedure. When the web pages have been read in, click on the "Edit site and home page details" on the "Tools" menu. Then tick "Enable search facility" and enter your user id and the group number. Then click "OK" and finish by resaving the web pages.
  5. Finally, upload to your web space the pages that have just been rewritten.

(If you have more than one HtmlPedigree website, see the next page.)
